The Four Cs, Without the Jargon

The GLISORA Atelier14 June 20264 min read

Round brilliant diamonds resting on charred black wood

Cut, colour, clarity, carat — what actually matters when the ring is on a hand, not under a microscope.

The four Cs were invented to give diamond quality a common language, and they do that well. But somewhere between the laboratory and the showroom they became a scoreboard — and buying by scoreboard is how people overpay for things the eye cannot see. Here is the honest hierarchy, from a house that sets diamonds every day.

Cut is king — spend here first

Cut is not the shape of the stone; it is the precision of its angles, and it is the single C your eye actually registers across a dinner table. A superbly cut diamond returns light so aggressively it can look a size larger than it is. A poorly cut one leaks light out of its base no matter how flawless the crystal. We do not set below Excellent cut in a solitaire, full stop.

Colour — buy with your eye, not the letter

Colour grades run from D (icy) downward. On paper, D–F sounds mandatory. On a hand, in warm light, a G or H stone set in yellow gold is indistinguishable from its costlier cousins. The metal matters more than the letter: white settings flatter higher colours; yellow and rose gold are forgiving hosts.

Clarity — "eye-clean" is the only grade that matters

No one will ever admire your diamond through a jeweller's loupe. Buy for the eye, not the microscope.

Most VS2 and many SI1 stones are perfectly eye-clean — their inclusions are invisible without magnification. Our buyers inspect every candidate stone precisely to find these: honestly graded, beautifully priced, visually flawless.

Carat — the C that bends the most

  • Diamond prices jump at the round numbers: 0.90 ct can cost dramatically less than 1.00 ct and look identical when set.
  • Spread matters more than weight — a well-cut stone wears its carats visibly.
  • A halo or a slim band will do more for perceived size than the next clarity grade ever will.

The craft is balancing the four against a real budget — which is a conversation, not a chart. Send our concierge your range on WhatsApp and we will show you exactly where your money works hardest.
